The university, as the administrator of the fund, shall oversee the allocation and disbursement of the Environmental Advocacy Fund.

However, Silliman University will keep the money in a restricted account, separate from its own operating funds.  A special bank account is created solely for this purpose, distinct and separate from other university accounts.

The cash donations from alumni and friends of Silliman worldwide were given in support of a common goal towards the protection of Dumaguete City’s coastal waters, as well as addressing other vital environmental concerns now and in the future.

SU and SAAI are united in opposing the proposed 174-hectare reclamation through: (1) research and scientific data gathering; (2) conduct of information dissemination and similar activities aimed at promoting community awareness on the issues at hand; (3) calling for transparency in the implementation of relevant processes; (4) demanding strict adherence to applicable national laws, local ordinances and guidelines set by concerned government agencies; (5) advocating for informed decision-making by government officials and stakeholders; (6) legal action to seek redress before the courts of law, if warranted; and (7) such other relevant activities as may be deemed necessary.

SU and SAAI express their gratitude to all the donors and pledgers. As the fund drive continues, both are confident in getting wider participation and consistent support for this worthy endeavor. (with reports from SAAI)
