Silliman holds 61st Honors Day rites
In keeping with its tradition of celebrating excellence, Silliman University (SU) held its 61st Honors Day convocation Feb. 11 to honor 800 students for top academic performance and present co-curricular awards to 7 others for exemplary academic excellence and student leadership.
Honors Day is a time-honored university event to recognize students of different colleges, schools, and institutes for their excellent academic as well as co-curricular performance. It is also Silliman’s way of honoring the parents and guardians of the top-performing students for their important role in helping them toward these achievements.
During the ceremonies, 49 students received University Honors, the highest honors that SU bestows on graduating seniors. University Honors are awarded to students in the upper 3 percent of their class in their junior and senior years, for which they have previously received College Honors. The names of the recipients of University Honors shall be inscribed on the Bronze Tablet of Silliman.
Another 101 students received College Honors. This recognition of superior scholarship is given to sophomore, junior, and senior students for being in the upper 3 percent of their class and maintaining a QPA of 3.5 or higher.
Meanwhile, a total of 650 students received Class Honors. This award is for students who are in the upper 10 percent of their class and who have a QPA of at least 3.25.
Co-curricular awards recognize students who best exemplify Silliman’s holistic Christian educational values of academic excellence and student leadership. This year’s co-curricular awardees are Carlisle Naudyn T. Caroro, Most Outstanding Student of the Year; Adrian C. Alforque, Senior Student of the Year; Daryl Robinson, recipient of the Leadership Award and the International Student of the Year Award; Archilles Isidore Z. Israel, Service Award recipient; Guide R. Dadang, Talent Award recipient; Neil Anthony E. Lajot, Freshman Student of the Year. Dr. Elmaco-Cardenas, director of the Office of Strategic Partnerships of SU and secretary-general of the Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia (ACUCA), exhorted the honorees to avoid sitting on their laurels and to find ways to use their abilities to make a difference in the world.
