SU alumni extend support to residents affected by Kanlaon Volcano eruption

Alumni Update January 6 – 12, 2025

The Silliman Alumni Association, Inc. (SAAI) and the Silliman Park-Bantayan Bible Study Cluster, the longest-running Bible study group of Silliman University (SU) Church, provided financial support to Dr. Eena Jalandoni’s medical mission in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, on December 22, 2024. The mission addressed the urgent health needs of residents affected by the Kanlaon Volcano eruption, particularly those in barangays near its slopes, where heavy volcanic ashfall had led to a surge in respiratory cases.

Dr. Jalandoni, a 2021 Medical School graduate of Silliman University, was assisted by Dr. Justine Kyrene T. Cequiña, Dr. Katherine Marisse G. De Juan, Dr. Romaine Gabriel G. Getalada and Dr. Diane Angelica E. Mendiola and other volunteers during the medical mission at the covered court of Barangay Poblacion-1, in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental.

Kanlaon Volcano continues to exhibit heightened activity, marked by increased volcanic ash emissions, frequent earthquakes, and tremors. Due to this elevated unrest, Alert Level 3 has been declared, prompting Local Government Units (LGUs) to implement evacuations within a 6-kilometer radius of the volcano’s summit. In response to the ongoing crisis, Dr. Eena Jalandoni’s medical mission extends support to various barangays in La Carlota City, providing essential healthcare services every Saturday.
