SU and SAAI commemorate 114th death anniversary of Dr. Horace B. Silliman

Silliman University Alumni Association Inc. (SAAI) – Dumaguete Chapter, in coordination with the SU Alumni and External Affairs, held a ceremonial program to honor the 114th Death Anniversary of Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman, at his bust by the SU Assembly Hall fronting the boulevard on May 4, 2023.

Atty. Pristine M. Raymond, SAAI – Dumaguete Chapter president, welcomed everyone at the intimate gathering and cited the contribution of Dr. Silliman to the community.

Meanwhile, Dr. Betty Cernol McCann, SU president, in her short message, emphasized how Silliman University is indeed blessed with the generous contribution given by Dr. Silliman.

“We are always told as Christians that in death there is life, and in the death of Dr. Horace B. Silliman, we continue to celebrate his legacy,” McCann said.

Dr. Silliman died on May 4, 1910 at 84, leaving a legacy of contributions to Cohoes, New York, as well as capital funding and scholarships for Hamilton College, Union College, and Mount Hermon Academy; building the Silliman Lodge in New Jersey (a home for girls, affiliated with the Christadora settlement house in New York City); and establishing SU in 1901 in Dumaguete City, Philippines. He was buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands Albany County, New York.

Dr. Earl Jude Paul L. Cleope, SU vice president for Academic Affairs, joined McCann along with Ruben N. Bokingo, SU Alumni and External Affairs director; Rev. Jonathan R. Pia, SU Church senior pastor and minister; Dr. Warlito S. Caturay Jr., Office of Media and Public Affairs (OMPA) director; Rev. Dr. Van Cliburn M. Tibus, Divinity School dean; Assoc. Prof. Teodora A. Cubelo, Institute of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (ICLS) director; Asst. Prof. Joy M. Dy, College of Computer Studies (CCS) dean; Asst. Prof. Rowena M. Turtal and Asst. Prof. Rochie C. Cagara from the College of Nursing; Moses Joshua B. Atega, International Students Office (ISO) adviser; and Engr. Dennis Noel De Lara, the accompanist.

Members representing the Silliman Alumni Association Inc. (SAAI) – Dumaguete Chapter, Silliman University Medical Center Foundation Inc. (SUMCFI), SU Church, SU President’s Office, SU Cafeteria, SU Facilities Management and Administrative Services (FMAS) and members of the Palmore family were also present at the ceremony.
