Silliman University (SU) awarded the exemplary service and dedication of 14 faculty and 6 staff members, as well as faculty members who have published a number of research studies during the Faculty & Staff Recognition Day 2023, May 15, 2023 at Silliman Hall.

SU recognized the faculty and staff awardees with the Faculty Service Award, Staff Service Award, Most Productive Faculty Award, and the Layague/Johnson Professional Excellence Award.

“Today we set aside a time to recognize a good number of you who have contributed to the strength, reputation, and recognition of the University as an institution…just like in any recognition ceremony, we would also like to challenge you who are being recognized today to pass on and multiply your good work so that more and more individuals will be in the circle that you are in right now. After all, you and your skills can be used as a legacy in your own unit, department, and for the entire university; that’s the only way for us to sustain the effort so that we continue being able to identify those who have rendered good service, those who have done research and community service, as well as those who have manifested professional excellence,” said Dr. Betty Cernol McCann, SU president, in a message to the awardees.

Alvin A. Corda, 2023 Staff Service Awardee

The Faculty Service Award and Staff Service Award are for faculty and staff who have served the University and its community for 20 years.

Dr. Warlito S. Caturay Jr., College of Arts & Sciences associate dean, gave a message on behalf of his fellow Faculty Awardees and said that this is a time to reflect on how to improve as a teacher and a time to cultivate a spirit of gratefulness to those who supported their professional journey.

“I would like to thank the people on whose shoulders we have been standing: our mentors, our parents, and our loved ones. I would also like to thank Silliman University for providing us a venue to practice a vocation that presents us many opportunities to offer our shoulders so someone else can stand on them,” he added.

In his message as the sole Staff Awardee this school year, Alvin A. Corda reminisced his journey in Silliman, starting as a working student at the Office of the Registrar and Admissions (ORA) where he now works. He also thanked those who mentored him under the ORA and Dr. Horace B. Silliman, SU’s founder, for establishing the University and opening the “gates of opportunity.”

The Most Productive Faculty Award is awarded every five years to faculty members who excel in the areas of research, community service, publications, lectureships, and creativity.

Dr. Chuchi S. Montenegro, Information & Communications Technology director, said on behalf of her fellow Most Productive Faculty Awardees: “This recognition is not just a testament of our individual achievements, but a reflection of the collective dedication and hard work that our academic community puts into advancing knowledge and understanding in our fields…We recognize that our work is not only valuable to ourselves and our colleagues but also to society as a whole. Our research and publications help inform policies, share public opinion, and inspire future generations of scholars and practitioners.”

The Layague/Johnson Professional Excellence Award is a two-fold grant enrichment and merit in recognition of guidance counselors, librarians, and Registrar’s Office personnel for their long-time dedication and loyal service. It was established in S.Y. 2002-2003 to honor the memories of Carolina Layague, who served as a Librarian, and Aquilino Layague, who served as a History Professor at SU.

Rochelle Marie C. Remollo of the Guidance and Testing Division spoke on behalf of her fellow Layague/Johnson Professional Excellence Awardees.

“We all strive to work towards providing services that our learners deserve and [need], to the best of our abilities…I am beyond humbled to receive this recognition on behalf of my colleagues, which speaks [volumes] more of with the people we are surrounded with than about us,” said Remollo.
