
SU hosts 15th Psychology Regional Forum
Hosted by the Silliman University College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Department of Psychology, under the leadership of Dr. Michele Joan D. Valbuena, chair, the 15th Psychology Regional Forum gathered psychology professionals, academics, and researchers from across the Visayas and Mindanao, on May 13-15, 2025, at the Silliman University Multipurpose Room (MPR).
With the theme “Alternative Tools for Healing: Storytelling and Music,” the three-day event aimed to explore emerging practices in the field of psychology and address current challenges in community mental health. The forum highlighted innovative approaches to healing and wellness, especially those rooted in culture, creativity, and connection.
Two distinguished speakers headlined the event. Rev. Al B. Fuertes, Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee and professor at George Mason University, delivered a lecture titled “Trauma and Healing: Transformative Impact of Storytelling,” drawing from his global work in psychosocial trauma healing and peacebuilding. Asst. Prof. Danielle Elise Zamar-Alcantara, RN, MM, MT-BC, a US board-certified music therapist and Silliman alumna, presented “Melodies of the Mind: The Therapeutic Effect of Music in Mental Wellness,” sharing her experiences using music therapy to support individuals with various health conditions.
Participants came from a wide range of institutions and organizations, including the Mada Consolacion – Cebu City, Global Officeworks, Inc., Resonate Music Therapy Studio, Central Philippine University, Department of Health Region X, Dusit Thani Davao, University of San Carlos, ABC Law Group, Bohol Island State University, Samar State University, Negros Oriental State University – Siaton Campus, Tagum Doctor’s College Incorporated – Davao, and Silliman University. The forum served as a collaborative platform for sharing knowledge, building connections, and advancing compassionate mental health initiatives throughout the region.
Dr. Margaret Helen U. Alvarez, interim vice president for Academic Affairs and Research (VPAAR), welcomed all participants during the opening of the regional forum.
