
SU hosts 1st MSP-NIR Research Congress and Convention
Silliman University (SU) made history by hosting the first-ever Mathematical Society of the Philippines–Negros Island Region Research Congress and Convention (MSP-NIR RCC) on September 24–25, 2025, at the Silliman University Library.
A joint initiative between MSP-NIR and the SU College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) – Mathematics Department, the two-day event drew around 100 participants, comprising mathematics educators, researchers, and students from Negros Island and neighboring regions.
The congress served as a platform to foster academic networking and promote research collaboration among mathematicians and scholars in related disciplines.

MSP President Dr. Editha C. Jose of the University of the Philippines Los Baños delivered the keynote address. The event also featured four plenary speakers, including Dr. Ma. Louise Antonette N. De Las Peñas, President of the DOST-National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP); Dr. Garry C. Cachuela, Dean of the West Visayas State University College of Education and former member of the DepEd Teacher Education Council; Dr. Alexander J. Balsomo, MSP Region VI President; and Dr. Felix R. Saucedo-Zendejo, a national researcher from Mexico, who joined virtually in a Mexico–Philippines video conference.
Over 35 research studies were presented across three parallel sessions, with SU represented by Asst. Prof. Ma. Lourdes D. Eullaran, Asst. Prof. Marivic G. Mohillo, and Asst. Prof. Zarujo C. Girasol.

The congress also highlighted the strong presence of Sillimanians in MSP-NIR leadership. Dr. Joemar C. Endam, MSP-NIR President and a BS Mathematics alumnus of Silliman University, and Dr. Rhea Rheem Muarip-Bolodo, RCC Chairwoman, MSP-NIR Secretary, and Chair of the SU Mathematics Department, are both SU alumni. Asst. Prof. Karlstein F. Diao, an SU MS Mathematics alumnus and faculty member, also serves as an MSP-NIR board member.
The MSP-NIR RCC concluded with renewed commitments to strengthen collaboration, research engagement, and mathematical excellence in the region.
