The Silliman University (SU) Library System celebrated the 88th National Book Week from November 16-23, 2022 with activities aimed to develop a love for reading and books among students, such as a book donation activity, book giveaways, and contests.

The SU Library launched the week-long celebration with a trivia booth where students can win prizes and through the SULibRO Program, an outreach program wherein books are donated to beneficiaries.

Through the SULibRO outreach activity, the SU Library distributed last November 17 and 18 books and resources donated by the First Presbyterian Church of Ann-Arbor Michigan to elementary in Sibulan, Negros Oriental, namely: Maslog Elementary School, Cangmating Elementary School, Sibulan Central School, and Magsaysay Elementary School. The SU Library team also conducted other activities such as storytelling, reader’s theater, bookmark making, and talks on book care and social media awareness.

The SU Library also donated books from the SU Main Library to Ajong National High School and Sibulan National High School-Balugo Extension. The team conducted talks on information literacy, career guidance, and responsible social media usage.

The outreach activity was done in cooperation with the local government of Sibulan.

According to a post on the SU Library’s Facebook page, the outreach activity was the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020 that the SU Library was able to conduct an activity under the SULibRO Program.

The SU Library also offered free books for students through the Book Buffet, a display at the Main Library; featured books authored by SU faculty members and other local writers through another display; and held mobile photography and Balak (Bisaya poetry) competitions.

National Book Week, which started through Proclamation No. 109, s.1936 signed by former Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon, is celebrated annually on November 24 to 30 to promote reading and literacy among Filipinos.
