SU prexy oversees academic affairs as search for new VPAAR continues

Silliman University President Dr. Betty Cernol McCann has assumed temporary oversight of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research (VPAAR) following the end of term and retirement of Dr. Margaret Helen Udarbe Alvarez on July 31.

Recognizing the VPAAR’s pivotal role in the university’s academic leadership, the Administration announced interim measures to ensure continuity, stability, and the upholding of academic standards while the search for a new VPAAR is underway.

In the meantime, the Office of the President will directly supervise academic operations. To support this arrangement, Dr. McCann has designated the following administrators as members of a Working Group for Academic Affairs:

  • Prof. Jose Edwin C. Cubelo, the most senior Dean, will serve as Academic Liaison for coordination across colleges and departments.
  • Dr. Ralton D. Bancairen, Chief of the Office of Registration and Records Management, will oversee enrollment, academic calendars, and compliance.
  • Dr. Lily Ann D. Bautista, Director of Quality Instruction and Excellence, will manage accreditation and program reviews.
  • Dr. Edna T. Calingacion, Dean of Student Services, will handle student affairs and related programs.

This group will report directly to the President to ensure that daily operations continue without disruption.

The university also announced that the call for nominations and applications for the VPAAR post remains open for the next two weeks. A Selection Committee comprising representatives from the Board of Trustees, senior faculty, academic administrators, and the Office of the President will begin shortlisting and interviews immediately after. The target date for the appointment of the new VPAAR is within 60 to 90 days.

“All academic operations—including class scheduling, curriculum planning, faculty evaluation, and accreditation activities—will proceed as scheduled,” the memo assured.

Dr. McCann called for the support, understanding, and prayers of the university community as Silliman moves through this leadership transition, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to its vision, mission, and core values.
