SU ranks 205th in global innovations ranking, lands 70th in ethics category

Silliman University (SU) has earned a spot in the 2025 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI), placing 205th overall and 70th in the Ethics category for its free computer education program for senior citizens.

SU was awarded for its flagship community engagement, the Free Computer Education for Senior Citizens, under the “Ethical Value” category.

Launched in 2019 through the Dr. Mariano C. Lao Innovation, Creation, and Invention (ICI) Laboratory, the program provides free digital literacy training to older adults, helping them navigate the modern digital world with confidence and independence.

The program empowers senior citizens through hands-on training in basic computer operations, internet use, and online communication. Conducted every Saturday over a three-month period, the sessions are led by faculty members with the support of senior high school interns and student volunteers. The intergenerational learning approach not only bridges the digital divide but also promotes empathy, mutual respect, and lifelong learning.

Also contributing to SU’s recognition is its integration of Artificial Intelligence into its educational framework. Through its Gen-AI Integration Framework, the university enhances educational quality and operational efficiency by promoting ethical AI use, personalized learning, and automation of routine tasks. The initiative includes faculty and student training, clear ethical guidelines, and community outreach, positioning SU as a leader in responsible AI integration in higher education.
Dr. Dave E. Marcial, director of the Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center (GSC) and program leader, said that the project showcases to the world SU’s disruptive initiatives aimed at future-proofing the university and ensuring its relevance in the AI-driven knowledge economy.

Marcial added that the recognition is a testament to what collaborative effort can achieve, fueled by a shared love and commitment to Silliman.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to our alumnus and donor, Dr. Mariano C. Lao, for sustaining the project. I am equally thankful to our dedicated team at the GSC and other units in the university, especially the College of Computer Studies and the Technology Business Incubation,” Marcial said.

Among Marcial’s collaborators are Asst. Prof. Janice Antoniette Forster, Asst. Prof. Joy Dy, Asst. Prof. Alfie Arcelo, Fredlie Bucog, Jade Montemayor, Cindy Ruth Villariza, Lisa Aurielle Maypa, Hya Cynth Moralidad, Russel Rhay Basiao, Jan Cynth Palama, and Steve Binarao.

The initiative aligns with Silliman University’s mission of fostering ethical leadership, compassion, and social justice through education. It has reached over 200 senior citizens to date, with plans for expansion, including the integration of modules on artificial intelligence, online banking, and telemedicine.

WURI is a global ranking system that evaluates higher education institutions based on real-world impact, focusing on innovation, social responsibility, and value creation.
