SU receives CHED’s EQUATE award

Silliman University (SU), through its College of Education (SU-CoE), was honored with the Excellence in Quality Assurance in Teacher Education (EQUATE) Award by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) during a ceremony held on April 2, 2025, at the Manila Hotel.

The award recognizes SU’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards in pre-service teacher education, as demonstrated by its adherence to CHED’s minimum standards, program accreditation, and outstanding performance in the Board of Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (LET).

SU is one of 102 institutions nationwide recognized by CHED from a pool of 1,553 institutions offering Bachelor of Science in Education programs.

Dr. Edizon Fermin, CHED Chair for the Technical Panel for Teacher Education, underscored the pivotal role of the Silliman University College of Education (SU-CoE) as a Center of Excellence in Education and EQUATE awardee. He emphasized that SU-CoE is expected to lead and disseminate the HEI GURO roadmap (Guaranteeing Quality, Upholding Synergy, Reframing Curricula, and Optimizing Pathways) as part of CHED’s strategic vision for enhancing teacher education across the country.

Meanwhile, in his message during the awarding ceremony, Dr. J Prospero De Vera III, CHED chairperson, challenged the awardees to continue to “sustain and enhance the quality of teacher education and nurture a culture of excellence in teacher education in the country.” He commended the awardees for their dedication to exceeding national standards, noting their exceptional performance in the PRC Licensure Exam for Teachers, high accreditation levels, and adherence to CHED’s quality assurance mechanisms. Furthermore, he lauded their commitment to going “above and beyond their mission to provide high-quality teacher education,” ensuring they meet the evolving demands of the teaching profession through innovative approaches and unwavering dedication to excellence.

Representing SU in the awarding ceremony were Dr. Gina F. Bonior, dean of the CoE; Dr. Elvie O. Nasvik, associate dean of the CoE; and Dr. Jasper Eric C. Catan, chairperson of the Teacher Education Program.

SU-CoE is a CHED-designated Center of Excellence in Teacher Education. It has achieved Level 4 accreditation status from the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities.
