SU-RPI kicks off research training series with publishing lecture

The Silliman University Research, Publication, and Innovation (SU-RPI) Office, led by Executive Director Dr. Robert S. Guino-o II, launched the first lecture in its series of research trainings on April 7, 2025, at the MBA Presentation Room of the College of Business Administration.

The training featured Dr. Arthur Dyke, a renowned journal publishing executive and consultant for academic publishers such as Springer, Nature, and Elsevier.
In his lecture titled “Planning Your Publication: Insights on the Submission and Review Process,” Dyke shared valuable advice on navigating the publishing landscape, specifically geared toward Silliman University’s deans and research coordinators.

Dyke emphasized that the first step in the article submission process is the editorial triage, where journal desk editors screen manuscripts based on specific criteria. These include the paper’s fit with the journal’s scope, clarity of message, originality, significance, accuracy, and relevance to readers.
“You have to sell yourself to get through the triage,” he noted.

He also offered practical strategies for manuscript preparation, such as framing the key message, selecting the appropriate journal, and improving the paper’s overall structure.

With over 380 peer-reviewed publications in the past 25 years, Dyke drew from extensive experience to guide participants through the complexities of academic publishing.

In his opening remarks, Guino-o highlighted the timeliness and importance of the training, saying it benefits faculty at all levels—from early-career researchers to seasoned scholars—by providing insights into submission strategies and the peer review process.

He also presented SU-RPI’s recommendation to establish research teams in each academic unit. He stressed that (1) each researcher contributes to the structure and function of the team; (2) every role is valuable—from conceptualization and proposal writing to fieldwork, data processing, manuscript development, and submission; and (3) research teams should aim for excellence while working within the realities of teaching loads and available resources.

The event was co-organized with the ICT Association of Dumaguete and Negros Oriental, through its president, Dr. Suzanne Lu-Bascara.
