SU SHS students showcase research at national DLSU Research Congress

Two research teams from the Silliman University Senior High School (SU SHS) presented their applied research projects at the 8th De La Salle University Senior High School Research Congress, held on June 23 and 25, 2026, at De La Salle University Manila.
Representing SU SHS were six Research Development 2 (RDL2) student researchers under the mentorship of Asst. Prof. Jan Cynth L. Palama, Research Adviser.
The first team, composed of Michaela Carlyle D. Cuento, Niña Nicole A. Tan, and Miguel Angelo S. Tiu, presented the study “Investigation of Banana (Musa spp.) Pseudostem-Derived Adsorbents as a Sustainable Alternative for Nickel Remediation in an Aqueous Solution.” The research explored the potential of banana pseudostem fibers as a low-cost, biodegradable biosorbent for removing nickel from contaminated water, demonstrating how agricultural waste can be transformed into sustainable environmental solutions.
The second team, consisting of Luke Peter C. Cena, Ziah Mae B. Baones, and John Ivan Lery V. Roderos, presented “Foil-Lined Plastic Roofing from Recycled Materials: Development and Evaluation for Sustainable and Affordable Housing.” Their study developed and evaluated a roofing prototype made from recycled plastic and reflective foil, demonstrating its potential to reduce indoor temperatures while providing an affordable and environmentally responsible housing alternative.
Their participation underscores SU SHS’s commitment to advancing senior high school research on the national stage while nurturing a culture of inquiry, innovation, and excellence in applied research.
Recognized as the largest gathering of senior high school researchers, mentors, and educators in the Philippines, this year’s congress brought together 1,885 participants, including 716 student presenters. A total of 220 research projects from more than 500 submissions were accepted, representing 39 institutions across the Philippines and one international school.
Anchored on the theme, “Catalysts of Accountability: Shaping a Transparent, Inclusive, and Sustainable Philippines through Educational Reforms,” the congress highlighted the vital role of education and research in promoting accountability, inclusivity, and sustainable national development.
