SUCN hosts forum to deepen students’ tech competency
With the aim of empowering future nurses in the digital age, the Silliman University College of Nursing (SUCN) held its Second Nursing Informatics Forum on May 14, 2025, at the Audio Visual Theater 1.
Themed “Nursing Informatics Applications, Competencies, and Career Opportunities,” the event gathered sophomore nursing students and faculty members to deepen their knowledge and competencies in the evolving field of nursing informatics.
According to Dr. Freslyn Lim-Saco, SUCN’s research coordinator, the seminar aimed to empower nurses to confidently use technology to enhance healthcare delivery and outcomes through expert insights on health informatics, competency development, and career opportunities, including nurse entrepreneurship.
Asst. Prof. Jethri Ken Carlo Catalan, dean of the Foundation University College of Nursing and SUCN alumnus (Class of 2004), served as resource speaker. Drawing from his extensive experience as a nurse anesthetist in the UK, as well as his clinical work in intensive care units both abroad and at Silliman University Medical Center (SUMC), and his background as a clinical research nurse, Prof. Catalan offered real-world perspectives on the competencies essential to nursing informatics. He also outlined diverse career opportunities available to nurses in this rapidly expanding field.
Now an annual event for sophomore nursing students, the forum continues to serve as a platform for building digital skills and preparing nurses for a tech-driven healthcare environment.
