Nursing Dean Attends Conference in San Diego

College of Nursing Dean Dr. Evalyn E. Abalos attended the 11th Annual National Conference of the Asian American Pacific Islander Nurses Association held March 28 to 29 in San Diego, California.

This year's AAPINA conference, which was co-organized by the Silliman University College of Nursing Alumni Association, Inc. (SUCNAAI), tackled at both plenary and in breakout sessions topics reflecting on the theme “Vulnerable Population: Implications for Research, Practice and Education.” Image

Silliman President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III was among the plenary speakers at the same conference. He spoke on “Higher Education in Asia: Issues and Challenges”.

Dr. Abalos also had the opportunity to meet separately with alumni, particularly those in the healthcare profession, and present to them developments at the College of Nursing related to its strategic direction vis-a-vis ASEAN 2015, infrastructure development, and accomplishments of its faculty and students.

Among those that facilitated her travel to San Diego was alumna Prof. Dinah Peñaflorida, president of SUCNAAI and a professor of nursing at Santa Monica College.

Before flying back to the Philippines, Dr. Abalos also traveled to Florida where she was hosted by Dr. Luth M. Tenorio, an Outstanding Sillimanian who is Emerita Dean and Professor at Seattle University. She was also able to connect with other alumni in Florida.

The College of Nursing has produced many topnotchers in the Nurse Licensure Exams. Its alumni have distinguished themselves not only in actual clinical practice but also in the academe, research organizations and international development agencies. The strength of its program and the competitive performance of its graduates have earned it the distinction of Center of Excellence in Nursing Education from the Commission on Higher Education.
