Alumni Update Letter February 2014
Dear Fellow Sillimanians and Friends:
The month of February was declared National Arts Month, and the Silliman University Cultural Affairs Committee scheduled a number of activities for its celebration. Lectures, art exhibits, poetry reading, a musical competition, stage plays and a dance performance by Ballet Philippines were among the highlights of the whole month celebration. The Valentine’s Day celebration caused heavy traffic at the restaurant strip along Silliman Avenue and Rizal Boulevard as students and the Dumaguete folk came out that evening to celebrate with their loved ones.
Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee Dr. Perla Rizalina M. Tayko recently launched her latest book, Making It to the Big 4: A Journey of a Decade. This book is rich in reflections and insights for business executives and organizations. It is a story of how C.L. Manabat & Co., a highly successful business partnership was established in the Philippines and grew to become a recognized member of the global business community. The book is a wealthy resource for people who wish to learn more about strategy, values, leadership, and practical theories in a cut-throat business environment.
Dr. Tayko is also lead author of 2 other books, namely: On the Ball – Leveraging the Future You Want with WBL (2012) and Whole Brain Literacy: Key to Wholistic Education & Success in Today’s World (2010). For the past 17 years Dr. Tayko has been with the Graduate School of Business, Assumption University of Thailand as its Director for Organization Development Institute (ODI). To get copies of her books, you can e-mail your request at [email protected].

SUACONA’s SU Church Allen Organ Project Moves On
Last year close to Tipon Silliman 2013, SUACONA launched the Allen Organ Fund Campaign project. The response was quite enthusiastic, especially from those whose “days of school and college” at dear old Silliman were happy and memorable. In a recent announcement coming from the SUACONA Allen Organ Project Committee, a continued effort is being made to reach out to those who do not wish to be left out from the opportunity of expressing their sense of gratitude and thanksgiving in a tangible way. The fund campaign also reaches out to our alumni in the Philippines and other parts of the world who may send their contributions directly to Silliman University. The deadline of the campaign is April 30, 2014. To donate, please make your checks payable to the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, indicating “SUACONA Allen Organ Project” on the Memo Box, and submit to SUACONA Treasurer, Mrs. Julia D. Jacinto, 16025 Area Dr. Ramona, Ca. 92065. For online contributions, please visit the suacona.com website and scroll down to the “Allen Organ Project” link. The SUACONA Allen Organ Project Committee is headed by Co-Chairperson: Mrs. Zeny Duran Bennett and Dr. Gideon “Kuya Box” Z. Alegado.
