'Our Business is to Nurture,' President Tells New Faculty, Staff

Silliman President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III welcomed over fifty newly hired faculty and staff members during the onboard orientation held at the College of Business Administration MBA Presentation Room on July 14.

Dr. Malayang said that Silliman is not just a workplace or an academic institution. 

“Our business is to nurture the human consciousness to soar beyond our speck-ness in the universe and to become an image of a just and wonderful God. Education in Silliman then becomes a ministry,” he explained.  

The orientation walked new personnel through the different policies of the university, including on punctuality in attendance and submission of grades, financial mechanisms that ensure integrity of transactions, employee rights, privileges and benefits, and the Code of Christian Collegiality which defines the kind of relationship one has for another in the campus.

Also present to discuss the critical areas of University operations were Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Betsy Joy Tan, University Treasurer Ms Carol Bartolata, Human Resource Development (HRD) Manager Atty. Fe Marie Tagle, Pastoral Team Coordinator Rev. Elmer Saa, Director of Instruction Prof. Juliet Padernal Director of Research Dr. Engrique Oracion, OIC-Director of Extension Prof. Emervencia Ligutom, University Librarian Prof. Lorna Yso, CARES (Counseling, Assessment, Research and Evaluation Services) Coordinator Dr. Evangeline Aguilan and representatives the Office of the General Counsel and the staff and faculty associations.   .

The Office of Instruction and the HRD Office organize an annual orientation for new personnel. It is done to equip them with a working knowledge of their respective responsibilities in their offices and in the University. It also provides an idea of the extent to which they can improve themselves professionally in Silliman. 

Silliman currently has personnel base of around 700 that is catering to a student population of more than 9,000.
