3 Papers by Faculty, Students Accepted in Int’l Tech Confab
Three papers from collaborative research projects by faculty and students have been accepted for presentation during the 3rd International Conference in Technology (InCiTe) organized February 12 to 13 in Manila.
The three are: “Traffic Sign Detection and Classification using Support Vector Machine,” “Dapogan: An Online Database of Food Recipes with Indigenous Ingredients,” and “Discovering Buying Patterns using Apriori Algorithm”.
“Traffic Sign Detection and Classification using Support Vector Machine” examines classification of traffic sign shapes and the symbol within each shape. It discusses the identification and classification of traffic signs in two different scenarios, using static images and video inputs acquired at specific time intervals. This paper was authored by Prof. Chuchi Montenegro of the College of Computer Studies (CCS) together with former students Jasser Arioste, Angelo Lao, Ellen Pinero and Cara Tilos.
“Dapogan: An Online Database of Food Recipes with Indigenous Ingredients” presents the analysis, design and implementation of an online database of food recipes with indigenous ingredients. The web-based system is called “dapogan,” a Visayan term of a stove that uses firewood, which depicts Philippine tradition and its local knowledge and indigenous practices in food production. This was undertaken by Dr. Dave Marcial, Prof. Janice Antoniette Forster and Ms. Marianne Sy of CCS, Mr. Mark Onte of the Management Information Systems Department, Mr. Alvyn Klein Mana-ay of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department and Ms. Ma. Lourdes Curativo of the College of Business Administration.
“Discovering Buying Patterns using Apriori Algorithm” uses eight year’s worth of sales transaction data processed using Apriori algorithm in a local grocery store in Dumaguete City in determining which items were sold frequently and with which items customers bought them with. The project was done by Prof. Forster.
InCiTe is an annual technology research conference for industry professionals and academics to meet, network, share ideas, present researches, and discuss recent developments and trends in IT education. Its theme this year is “Making an Impact through Research in Technology.”
