Around 50 heads of schools and faculty attended the “Service-Learning Development Seminar-Workshop for Visayas and Mindanao” hosted May 18 to 20 by Silliman University. The program was sponsored by the Private Education Assistance Council/Fund for Assistance to Private Education (PEAC/FAPE) and the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations (COCOPEA), of which Silliman President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III is the Chair. Keynote speaker was Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan (ninth from left), Silliman Vice President for Academic Affairs and concurrent Acting President while Dr. Malayang is on official leave. Promoting service-learning as a teaching pedagogy, the seminar-workshop aimed for the participants to: (1) appreciate the concepts and pedagogy of service-learning in higher learning in the Philippines; (2) institutionalize service-learning by integrating the concepts in selected subjects of the various course programs; and (3) promote service-learning as a means for the developing values, cultural awareness, civic responsibility, and leadership among students.
