1st Silliman Film Open Screens 19, Gives Out 20 Awards

An all-student production that culminated with its own version of film awards almost filled the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium on February 25.

The 1st Silliman Film Open screened a total of 19 short films produced, directed and edited by Silliman students and where actors were Silliman students as well.  

Festival director Asst. Prof. Ian R. Casocot, who is a faculty of the English and Literature Department, said the Film Open was an offshoot of a class project. It span off from what was known as the 61 Short Film Festival that showcased outputs of the Communication 61 (Film Appreciation) class of the College of Mass Communication. It is now open to students from other disciplines.

Accepted into the Film Open were the films: “KH 13” by Leahlou Abellanosa (Mass Comunication III), “The Miracle” by Babak Akbari (Mass Comunication IV), “Just for Abraham” by Charlemagne Balasa (Mass Communication III), “Faeries” by Lurlyn Mae Carmona (Mass Communication III), “The Spotlight” by Lovelein Catubay (Mass Communication III), “Father Bernard” by Nova Veraley Grafe (Mass Communication IV), “Online Job” by Milcah Inggo (Mass Communication III), “The Letter” by Babe Jocelie Isaga (Mass Communication II), “Tigway” by Maya Jajalla (Mass Communication IV), “Screenplay” by Kimberly Grace Limpahan (Mass Communication IV), “Asa Ka Munaog?” by Jae Nejudne (Mass Communication IV),“The Dolls” by Kae Nuique (Mass Communication III), “Rhythm & Poetry” by Gian Dominic Pantejo (Mass Communication III), “Substitute” by Lorie Jayne Soriano (Mass Communication IV), “Free Hugs” by Ina Isabelle Taburaza (Mass Communication IV), “The Anniversary” by Geno Venenoso (Nursing IV), and “Dali” by Suzmita Villegas (Mass Communication IV).

In a separate screening done earlier on February 23 at the Cyber-Lecture Hall of the Instructional Media and Technology Center, featured were two entries: “Amphi at 3:00” by Rhodnie Teves (Management IV) for documentary, and “Spaced Out” by Mac Florendo (Mass Communication III) for music video. 

A panel of jurors added highlight to the Film Open, with 20 individual awards in different categories up for grabs. The panel was composed of theater artist Ms Dessa Quesada-Palm, entrepreneur Ms Annabelle Lee-Adriano, Fine Arts instructor Mr. Moses Joshua Atega, Mass Communication instructor Ms Charmaine Ampong-Dabucol, visual artist and critic Mr. W Don Flores, theatre producer Mr. Hendri Go, filmmaker Mr. Mark James Kho and environmental advocate Mr. Leo Mamicpic.
