Alumni Updates (March 2-8)

ImageOn February 22, 2015, all eyes were on the red carpet event of the Oscars not only for the big names in the entertainment industry but also for the creations that they were wearing. For this year’s Oscars, alumnus Alexis Monsanto (HS ‘82) dressed up Swiss actress Nissa Kashani who appeared in Parvaneh, a film nominated for Best Short Film. Alexis shares: “As a Filipino designer, we all dream to be in the Oscars. And that night helped me a lot to get my name out there and be more visible. Of course, I was also able to represent the Philippines and the Filipino community.”

The Silliman University General Alumni Register (SUGAR), a Houston, Texas-based alumni chapter, was a lead organizer for a recent Medical-Surgical Mission at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital on February 23 to 27. It was done in collaboration with Houston Alliance of Volunteer in Medicine. The 30-member team was composed of surgeons, occupational therapists and nurses coming from Houston and Los Angeles. There were also local volunteers. Silliman University hosted a welcome dinner for the team that also had among its highlights a performance from students of the College of Performing and Visual Arts.
