Alumni Updates (July 13-19)

Outstanding Sillimanian Prof. Priscilla Lasmarias-Kelso, president of the Silliman Alumni of New England (SANE), and husband Rev. Bart Kelso recently hosted a gathering at their residence in Newton, Massachusetts for visiting Alumni Affairs Director Ruben N. Bokingo. It also doubled as a celebration for alumna Myrish Cadapan-Antonio who recently graduated with a maste’rs degree in public policy and public administration from the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government (HKS). Antonio received two awards at HKS: the Raymond and Josephine Vernon Award for academic distinction and the Lucius N. Littauer Award, the highest distinction for mid-career student that inscribes her name in a tablet. Antonio currently serves as a teaching fellow under Edward S. Mason Program and a summer intern and fellow at the HKS Center for Public Leadership (CPL). By the end of summer, she will join as director for programs of the HKS CPL.

Another “Meet and Greet” potluck luncheon was organized by the Silliman University Alumni Association of New York-New Jersey (SUAA NY-NJ) Chapter to welcome Mr. Bokingo. There were 23 alumni gathered at the home of hosts, alumni Mr. Carlos and Mrs. Evangeline Manjares, at their residence in Dix Hills, New York last July 5. Mr. Bokingo delivered a brief speech titled, “Proud To Be A Sillimanian”, and presented updates on campus. Present was SUAA NY-NJ chapter president Dr. Felella Kiamco-Millman who presided over the open forum. One of the planned projects of SUAA NY-NJ is the Student-Alumni Scholarship Matching Program with the Alumni and External Affairs Office.

The paintings of alumnus “Jun” V. Jamosmos Jr. (Accounting 1983) are now on exhibit at Chelsea’s Agora Gallery, 530 West 25th St, Chelsea, New York, running July 7-28, 2015. The gallery says the exhibition of self-taught artist, Jamosmos, titled, “Répartie in Art”, are for art lovers who enjoy thought-provoking works and meeting talented and interesting artists. It adds: “This outgrowth of his life experience combines spirituality and spontaneity to create a truly compelling body of work… He captures the essence of a wide variety of people, using a color palette that leans toward earth tones (though his images are often punctuated with bright shades and streaks).”

Jamosmos says his portraits often start with chance meetings with people who eventually agree to sit for a photo session with him. Those photo sessions do not only lead to the inevitable painted portrait, but also they often begin long-lasting personal friendships. “Every subject I paint,” he says, “invokes a call to a journey that doesn’t stop with and in the canvas.” The art gallery schedule is from Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 6pm. https://www.facebook.com/junjamosmos?fref=tf
