Alumni Updates (August 10-16)
Outstanding Sillimanian Mr. Julio O. Sy, Sr. was recently presented the Don Carlos Locsin Award for his outstanding contributions to the growth of and continuous support for the sugar industry during the 62nd Philsutech Annual National Convention held August 12 in Cebu City. Philsutech is a national gathering of sugarcane technologists, sugar millers, sugarcane planters, ethanol distillers, bio-energy producers, and providers of services, products and equipment for the Philippine sugar cane industry. Mr. Sy owns Busco Sugar Milling Company in Bukidnon and Hideco Sugar Mill in Leyte.
Dr. Crispin C. Maslog, the first director of the School of Journalism and Communication (1966-1982), now College of Mass Communication, will be giving a lecture titled “In the Beginning Was the Word: How the College Began”, on August 25 at the Silliman University Instructional Media and Technology Center. In collaboration with MassCom alumni and present and former faculty members, Dr. Maslog is in the process of writing a history book on the College. His lecture will give a birds’ eye view of the beginnings of the School of Journalism and Communication.
Alumna Mrs. Josefina C. Columna (Journalism ’71), project coordinator for the up-coming book, is inviting alumni of the school to submit a brief account of memorable events or stories, including pictures during their college days, for inclusion in the history book. Dr. Maslog will also be donating books he has authored/co-authored in a simple ceremony before his lecture on August 25.
