Service-Learning Center Hosts Japanese, Korean Students

 A total of eight students from Japan and Korea are on campus for a month-long service-learning program.

Being administered by the Service-Learning Center, headed by Prof. Emervencia Ligutom, the program this school year, which runs from June 28 to July 26, is customized for two universities: International Christian University (ICU) in Japan and Seoul Women’s University (SWU) in Korea.

Each ICU and SWU sent four students to experience community immersion and the Filipino way of life:

Service-learning is a teaching pedagogy that brings students to communities, allowing them to appreciate concepts and theories through actual community interaction. The students are graded and their progress monitored through journals and a series of reflection sessions. At Silliman, service-learning is institutionalized and incorporated into all academic offerings.
