Silliman University will honor on August 28 at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium Dr. Romeo P. Ariniego in the field of Medicine, Dr. Evangeline Bravo-Manjares in the field of Community Service, Dr. Evelyn Tan-Requiza in the field of Education and Historical Research and Ms Lucy Jumawan-Sauer in the field of Performing Arts (Dance). Dr. Romeo P. Ariniego A professor at the College of Medicine of the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute, Dr. Ariniego graduated from Silliman with a degree of Bachelor of Science in 1967. He pursued a medicine at the University of the Philippines – Manila. He spent his fellowship in cardiology at the Sahlgrenska Hospital in Sweden and post-residency training at Lidcombe Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Ariniego has served the De La Salle-Health Sciences Campus (DLS-HSC) University Medical Center in various capacities: Chief of the Cardiovascular Division (1987- present), Vice President / Medical Director (1993-1999), and Dean (2005-2007), concurrently while he was Vice President of DLS-HSC. He also served as Dean of the DLS-HSC College of Medicine from 1999-2002. Before joining DLS-HSC, he also took on teaching and administrative posts at the UP colleges of Medicine and Nursing, UP Philippine General Hospital and the Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine. An author and co-author of nine scholarly publications, Dr. Ariniego has received several awards from 1972 to 2009, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Philippine Heart Association, National Lorenzo M. Tañada CHIMES Award from De La Salle Philippines and the International Health Professional distinction, which he received in Cambridge, England. Dr. Evangeline Bravo-Manjares New York-based Dr. Bravo-Manjares finished her Bachelor of Arts degree at Silliman University. She earned her graduate degree in social work from the Philippine Women’s University and her Master of Arts from Columbia University in New York. She obtained her of Doctor of Education from the Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Dr. Bravo-Manjares is presently Dean for Academic Student Services at Nassau Community College, a unit of the State University of New York. Before her present position, she was Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at Malcolm-King College, an extension of Fordham University, Personnel and Finance Aid Assistant at Columbia University, and Program and Administrative Officer in the Asian Regional Office of the United Nations in the Philippines. While residing in the United States, Dr. Bravo-Manjares continues her community work in the Philippines through the Bravo-Manjares Learning Center which offers literacy programs at the Southern Christian College in Midsayap, Cotabato. She also organized the Bookstore Voucher Program that provided educational assistance to 2,000 youth, and developed the Job Location Development Program at Nassau College. A proud Filipino, Dr. Bravo-Manjares is a volunteer to many organizations and serves as Board Member of the Filipino Children’s Fund in New York. Dr. Bravo-Manjares has received many distinctions throughout her career and involvements. Among them is being included on the “Who’s Who in Higher Education� list, sponsored by the Association of Black Women in Higher Education, and the Outstanding Filipino-American Achievers in America Award (Professional [Education] Sector) from the Filipino Heritage Foundation, Inc. Dr. Evelyn Tan-Requiza Dr. Tan-Requiza has served as professor in several colleges and universities in the areas of history and political science. She is a graduate of Silliman University with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (magna cum laude) in 1965. She obtained her degrees of Master of Arts in History from the Ateneo de Manila University and Doctor of Philosophy in Philippine External Relations from UP Diliman. She served Ateneo de Manila University as a professor and took on leadership roles in the same university as Faculty Development Coordinator, Summer Program Director and Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs of its School of Arts and Sciences and as Associate Chair (1993-1994) and Chair (1994-1996) of its Department of Political Science. Concurrent with her teaching career were involvements in organizations where she was an officer. Among them were as Treasurer and Conference Coordinator of the Philippine Association of Chinese Studies and as Secretary of the Philippine Political Science Association. A woman of faith, she was also president of the Women’s Guild of the Church of the Risen Lord at UP Diliman and later joined the First Filipino Presbyterian Church of Azusa, California as Elder Commissioner. Dr. Tan-Requiza’s commitment to education was recognized with the fellowships and awards that she received. She was an ASEAN Visiting Research Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs in 1992, an ASEAN Grantee to the European Union (Netherlands, France, Belgium and Luxembourg) in 1994, and a visiting professor at the Institute for the Study of Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Dr. Tan-Requiza was also a recipient of the Horacio de la Costa Professorial Chair at the Ateneo and was later cited in “The Marquis Who’s Who in the World (15th Edition)�. In 2008, Davao Central College named her Outstanding Alumna in Education. Ms. Lucy Jumawan-Sauer Ms Jumawan-Sauer is regarded as an innovator and catalyst for dance development, presently the Managing Director of Contemporary Dance Association Limited in Australia. She completed her elementary and high school education from Silliman University in 1948 and 1952, respectively. She graduated from Saint Paul University from its Associate in Commercial Science program and later completed a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which was issued by the New South Wales Technical and Further Education Commission in Sydney, Australia. A passionate ballet dancer, Ms Jumawan-Sauer was a dance soloist in “Swanlake� and “Nutcracker� with the world’s prima ballerina, Russian Alexandra Danilova, in 1957. She joined Silliman for ten years as Director and Choreographer at the Dance Department. In 1972, she was invited by the Philippine House Consulate in Australia to perform in honor of then Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. This happened in the same year when she became Director and Choreographer for the Philippine dance performance during the First Folkloric Festival at the Sydney Opera House. From that time on, she has been invited to perform, train and lecture about dance and judge in dance tournaments in Australia and New Zealand. Ms Jumawan-Sauer has served as founding director and principal of performing arts institutions and organizations in Australia, including the Cultural Arts International, Dances of Asia and the Asian Artist Association of Australia. Since 1972, she has been contributing to various projects in and outside of the Filipino community in Australia that involve fund-raising projects and cultural presentations. For her commitment to transforming dance into a venue to bridge cultures, she is a recipient of numerous awards in her field. In 1979, she became the first Filipino to receive the Migrant of the Year Award from the SBS Television Documentary in Australia. Later in 1995, she received a Plaque of Recognition from The 3rd Sydney Colours Kayumanggi Talent Showcase for Excellence in Performing Arts, Dance, Choreography and Contribution to Aboriginal Dance for 23 years.
