Silliman Carillon Music System to Remind Listeners of ‘Silliman Roots’

Silliman recently started using the Carillon music system as part of the Church and campus life of the Silliman community.

The Carillon is a set of bells in a tower, played using a keyboard or by an automatic mechanism like a piano roll.  In Silliman, recorded carillon music at the SU Church is played on speakers installed all over the campus every day at 6AM, 6PM and 10PM. The speakers are located on top of Ausejo Hall, Vernon Hall, and Uytengsu Hall as well as at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.  Soon, additional speakers will also be mounted at the SU Church.  

Traditional Christmas carols will be part of the programming during the Christmas season apart from the traditional church music and hymns.  Soon, the Carillon music system will also be used as the University’s alarm system during emergency situations e.g. lockdown, fire, earthquake, etc.

This project is made possible with the funding from Silliman alumnus, Mr. Rolando V. Magdamo and wife, Mrs. Helga Vogt Magdamo.  

“I want the community to be reminded of the roots of Silliman whenever they hear the carillon. We are a Christian University, and we should never apologize for that,” Mr. Magdamo said.
