Fraternal Workers Honored in Display

“The soul of Silliman University remains with its past.”

This was stressed by Silliman President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III in his message during the launching of the Fraternal Workers Historical Visual Displays on August 23 at the Sillimaniana Collection of the Robert B. and Metta J. Silliman Library.

The display pays tribute to 108 American missionaries who served the University from the time it was established in 1901. It is open to the public for free.

Dr. Malayang highlighted the contributions of the fraternal workers in the different aspects of campus life, with the appreciation of faith in the context of education as among their legacies in the University.

“Freedom of mind is best nurtured in certainty of faith,” Dr. Malayang said.

The missionaries, he explained, provided faith-strengthening opportunities to students from different religions and facilitated an inclusive process that developed competence and character within them.

Members of the families of the fraternal workers were among those who attended the launching.
