HK-Based Poet, ‘Performance Poetry’ Mark SUNWW’s 2nd Week
The second week of the 52nd Silliman University National Writers Workshop (SUNWW) features a lecture by poet from Hong Kong and a “performance poetry” by a Silliman alumnus.
On May 16, Mr. David McKirdy, the organizer of the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, delivers a talk on “Use What You’ve Got, Take What You Need” to this year’s fellows at the Cyber Lecture Hall.
Mr. McKirdy is one of this year’s international panelists taking part in the writing workshop. His works have been published in Asia and other parts of the globe. Most of them are contained in the collection Accidental Occidental.
In the evening of the next day, visual and performing artist Mr. Razceljan Luis Salvarita takes center stage for his interpretation of selected poems in “Rhythm: Recital: A Celebration of Performance Poetry”. He intends to use body movements in capturing the drama and emotions of literary pieces. His performance at the Silliman Hall is the second of three scheduled poetry reading events.
Mr. Salvarita graduated from the College of Mass Communication in 2009 and is currently based in Bali, Indonesia. During his college years, he generated public support to save the Twin Lakes in his unique environmental campaign where he walked almost naked around Dumaguete City.
The fellows will continue to hold their midweek out-sessions in a beach resort in Siaton, Negros Oriental. Setting the tone is the play The Son of Ashes by another alumnus, Earnest Hope Tinambacan, taking place prior to the sessions in the morning of May 17.
Silliman launched the 52nd SUNWW last May 6 at the Rose Lamb Sobrepeña Writers Village in Camp Look-out, Valencia, Negros Oriental. The event was attended by the fellows and the panelists, led by Susan S. Lara, SUNWW’s Director-in-Residence. Also present during the opening ceremonies were Silliman University Board of Trustees Chair Prof. Leonor M. Briones and Vice President for Finance and Administration Prof. Cleonico Y. Fontelo.
