Summer Graduation
SUMMER COMMENCEMENT
By Dr. Betsy Joy B. Tan, Vice President for Academic Affairs
(Welcome remarks delivered during the 3rd Summer School Commencement Exercises held May 19, 2013 at the Silliman University Church.)
The book of Proverbs is a collection of practical, everyday concerns.
And so, as you leave the portals of Silliman to ‘roam the world near and far’, let me share with you a few selected vital nuggets of wisdom for your journey beyond your comfort zone the past few years in this knowledge-creating community here at Silliman University.
In Chapter 12, Verse 1 says: Anyone who loves knowledge wants to be told when he is wrong. It is stupid to hate being corrected. From Verse 23: Smart people keep quiet about what they know, but stupid people advertise their ignorance.
In Chapter 15, Verse 7 reads: Knowledge is spread by people who are wise, not by fools. Verse 23 says: What a joy it is to find just the right word for the right occasion.
From Chapter 16, Verse 23 is: Intelligent people think before they speak; what they say is then more persuasive. And this is Verse 32: It is better to be patient than powerful. It is better to win control over yourself than over whole cities.
Chapter 18, Verse 1 says: People who do not get along with others are interested only in themselves; they will disagree with what everyone else knows is right.
And Chapter 19, Verse 8 is most significant: Do yourself a favor and learn all you can; then remember what you learn and you will prosper.
After this 3rd summer commencement today then dear graduates, proud parents, grandparents and many significant others equally jubilant friends and loved ones, we rejoice with you in the knowledge that the book of Proverbs is there for each one of you.
Everyone of us knows that knowledge work – the challenges in the classroom, the endless candles burned at various midnights, the tears and joys of learning achievements – is never fun. Knowledge work has also been made more difficult because it is a human activity that takes place inside each brain – invisible, highly personal, intrinsically individual. And because knowledge is renewable and changing, the fuel for innovation and advancement, your success in your knowledge work then deserves due recognition!
May the wisdom of Proverbs be your constant companion as you shape your career. Peace and love too, for this 3rd Summer Commencement offering that symbolizes the badge of loyalty for “. . . dear old Silliman, her honor bright to shield!”
