University Celebrates Peace Week
The Religion and Peace Studies Department of the Divinity School is spearheading the celebration of Peace Week on September 16 to 21.
This year’s celebration centers on education, the same priority promoted by the United Nations in raising awareness on the global peace agenda. September 21 is decared by the United Nations as the International Day of Peace.
A puppet show narrating the story of peace kicks off the event on September 16. It is staged by Silliman students and will be done at different day care centers in Dumaguete, in partnership with the City Social Welfare and Development.
The College of Education and the College of Performing and Visual Arts will also mount an art exhibit using recycled materials. Works reflect the theme “From Chaos to Peace”.
Capping the weeklong celebration is the “Sports for Peace and Development”. This program promotes sports in development camaraderie and teamwork, and engages students who are at risk of dropping out of school and are currently under the Project Agakay of the Department of Education.
