RULES FOR 
RECOGNITION OF HONORS STUDENTS

I. CLASS HONORS

Students in the upper ten percent of each class in each college with a minimum QPA of 3.25 are awarded Class Honors and are entitled to have their names printed on the Honors List in recognition of their high scholarship.

II. COLLEGE HONORS

Students who obtained an average of at least 3.5 QPA, representing the upper three percent of the sophomore, junior and senior classes in the different colleges, shall be awarded College Honors and are entitled to have their names printed on the Honors List in recognition of their superior scholarship.

III. UNIVERSITY HONORS (BRONZE TABLET)

University Honors are awarded in recognition of students’ sustained excellence in scholarship. To qualify, students must:

a) have been awarded college honors in both junior and senior years;

b) belong to the upper three percent of the university’s senior class, based on ranking.

The awardees are entitled to have their names inscribed on the Bronze Tablet.

IV. RULES OF PROCEDURES

1. In instances when:

a. there are many students who obtained a minimum QPA of 3.25 of each class in each college, only those students who belong to the upper ten percent (10%), based on ranking, shall qualify for class honors;

b. there are many students who obtained a minimum QPA of 3.50 of each class in each college, only those students who belong to the upper three percent (3%), based on ranking, shall qualify for college honors.

2. Averages are computed to two decimal places, except that in a tie average will be computed to three decimal places by the Honors Committee. Should there be another tie, students shall be declared in the same honor ranking. Grades considered for honors are those earned in semesters of residence as follows:

a. freshman honors, first semester; sophomore honors, second and third semester; junior honors, fourth and fifth semesters; senior honors, sixth, and seventh semesters; or

b. one semester and two summer sessions where there has been no intervening registration in a regular semester; or

c. for students requiring more than eight semesters to graduate based on their published prospectus including students in the Exchange Work Study Grant, determination of senior honors will be based upon two semesters preceding the semester in which the students are also scheduled to graduate. For such students, junior honors may also be deferred upon recommendation of the College in which the student is registered. Grades considered for honors shall be those on file in the Office of Registration and Records Management.

d. Summer School grades are not included in the computation.

3. Students who have been credited more than 20 hours of courses taken from other schools are not eligible for Class Honors as freshmen; and no students, other than freshmen, are considered for Honors until they have been in residence for two semesters or their equivalent.

4. Students will be classified as to colleges for honors on the basis of their registration for the last semester in which their grades are considered for honors. In determining the classification of students, every college shall submit a list of their enrolled students to the Office of Registration and Records Management every first semester.

5. Students are eligible for Class, College or University honors irrespective of whether or not they are in residence after the last semester in which their grades are considered.

6. Students who graduate in less than eight semesters will not be considered for senior honors prior to graduation. If earned, these honors will be awarded after graduation.

7. Only students who carry full load based on curriculum or at least fifteen (15) units per semester shall be considered for Honors Award.

8. No students shall appear on the Honors List for two years as a member of the same class, i.e., freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, except in the five-year program, where the third and fourth years are considered as junior.

9. Honor pins will be awarded to those who have earned college honors for two consecutive years.

10. A recipient of University Honors who has earned a degree in a college of the University shall be disqualified for University Honors for work in another undergraduate college of the University.

11. A student who repeats a subject for the purpose of obtaining a higher QPA is disqualified for the Honors Award.

12. If a student repeats a subject as determined by the program, both grades should be considered in the computation.

13. No student with a grade below 2.3 (letter grade: Average) in the semester considered should be eligible for the Honors Awards.

14. No student with more than one INC per semester be considered for the Award unless the incomplete is incurred due to justifiable reasons as determined by the College and approved by the Honors Committee.

15. No student who drops a course or courses after four weeks except for emergency reasons may be considered for the Award.

16. For Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Science in Business Computer Application and other courses of similar nature, where the grades of the students could not be made available until the end of the internship period, the appropriate honors award shall be reflected in the permanent record of the student after the last semester of the internship year. In addition to the above, the student should be recommended by the Dean of the College, with endorsement from the Chair of the Department and one senior faculty.

17. The Honors Awards of qualified students shall be made and approved by the College. For this purpose, each College shall review the pre-evaluated list of the Office of Registration and Records Management. Once validated, the College shall post the list for at least five working days. Appeals shall be heard and decided by the College. As soon as the appeal process is concluded, the College shall submit the final list to the Honors Committee for approval and further endorsement to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Based on the list, the Office of Registration and Records Management shall send congratulatory emails to the honor students.

18. There should be only one “HONORS AWARDS CONVOCATION” every school year.
