SU rewards LET 5th placer Dyann Tubio

Silliman University (SU) alumna Dyann Alam Tubio, who placed fifth in the secondary level of the March 2026 Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), received an incentive from the University in recognition of her achievement.

Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research Dr. Lily Ann D. Bautista presented the incentive to Tubio at her office, with Dr. Rhea Rheem Muarip-Bolodo, chairperson of the Mathematics Department, in attendance.

When teaching became part of the equation

Tubio had always been drawn to numbers, but teaching was not originally part of the equation. That changed as she discovered the fulfillment of helping other students understand mathematics, a path that eventually led her to take the LET and rank among the country’s top examinees.

Tubio graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree from SU in 2025, becoming the first graduate of the Mathematics Department to receive the University’s highest academic distinction.

A Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) undergraduate scholar from 2021 to 2025, Tubio also received Silliman University’s Academic Honor Scholarship from 2022 to 2025. Her other academic distinctions included University Honors in 2025, College Honors in 2023 and 2024, and Class Honors in 2022.

She was among the 14 new licensed professional teachers produced by SU in the March LET. The University posted an 83.33 percent passing rate in the elementary level and a 100 percent passing rate in the secondary level, both above the corresponding national passing rates reported by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

Tubio’s interest in mathematics began long before college.

“When I was in elementary school and started learning, I found numbers and operations more interesting for me than letters and words,” Tubio recalled.

She joined mathematics competitions and found satisfaction in solving problems and arriving at solutions or proofs. When she entered college, however, she discovered that pure mathematics was different from the applied mathematics she had grown to enjoy in high school. Curiosity about the discipline and her determination to complete the program kept her going.

Teaching gradually emerged as another possibility.

“When I started studying BS Mathematics, teaching was not my first choice but I have considered it,” she said.

As she progressed through college, Tubio found that she enjoyed explaining mathematical concepts to other students. Her experience as a part-time mathematics tutor further strengthened that interest.

“Being able to help students understand their math topics and witnessing their progress made me see teaching as a path I may pursue,” she said.

Tubio worked as a part-time mathematics tutor from 2023 to 2025, providing one-on-one instruction to junior and senior high school students and developing lessons according to their individual learning needs and goals.

According to Muarip-Bolodo, SU’s BS Mathematics program is structured to prepare students for different career paths, including research, data analysis, statistics, education, and financial work. Students who intend to pursue teaching may take 18 units of Education electives as part of the program.

Muarip-Bolodo noted that Tubio’s preparation for the LET drew from different areas of her Silliman education: General Education courses under the College of Arts and Sciences, her Mathematics specialization under the Mathematics Department, and Professional Education courses under the College of Education.

She also credited Tubio’s aptitude and study habits as important factors in her performance in the examination.

For Tubio, her mathematics training gave her a strong foundation in analytical and logical thinking. She found the situational and application questions in the LET particularly challenging, especially those in which the choices appeared correct but required the examinee to identify the best answer.

Now a licensed professional teacher, Tubio hopes to use her mathematics background to help students become more engaged and interested in the subject.

“I hope to share my knowledge in Mathematics to students in a way they will be engaged and interested,” she said. “I hope to apply what I have learned and continue learning.”
