Alumni Updates August 6 – 12, 2018
Balik Talent Lecture Aug. 24. Silliman alumnus and Geologist Moses L. Alcala, a New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professional, will conduct a Balik Talent Lecture on August 24, 2018, 10 am – 12 noon at SC 110. His lecture titled Appreciating and Protecting our Water Resources: A Hydrological Perspective will be attended by Biology students and majors. This Balik Talent Lecture is made possible through the Silliman University Alumni Association New York-New Jersey Chapter, SU Alumni College, SU Alumni and External Affairs Office, and the SU Biology Department.
Moses L. Alcala finished his Early Childhood School (1965), Elementary (1971), and High School (1975) all at Silliman. He got his BS Geology degree from University of the Philippines in 1981 and did post-graduate studies in petroleum geology at Clausthal University in Germany (May 1985 to May 1986). Alcala then proceeded to earn a Master’s degree in Geology from City University of New York (1990).
SUAA NY-NJ Chapter Annual Potluck Picnic. The Silliman University Alumni Association, New York-New Jersey Chapter, gathered for their Annual Potluck Picnic last August 5, 2018. The event was held this time at the Dunkerhook Park, Pavilion-D, in Paramus, New Jersey, which is part of the Saddle River County Park System. It was a well-attended alumni fellowship with family and friends of Silliman.
The SUAA NY-NJ Chapter has continually supported the Student-Alumni Scholarship Matching Program of the Alumni and External Affairs Office. The following working students have benefited from this scholarship fund for school year 2017-2018: Ma. Cassandra Acab – Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English; Wingman Chan – Bachelor of Science in Chemistry; Rhea Chavez – Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English; Rio Enolpi – Bachelor of Library & Information Science; April Den Ozarraga – Bachelor of Business Management; Julianne Villacaol – Bachelor of Nursing; Reshel Ybarsabal – Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English; and Matt Gaven Matibag – Bachelor of Secondary Education major in MAPEH.
