Alumni Updates (January 2 – 8, 2017)
Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee for Performing Arts, Miguel C. Braganza received the 2016 Distinguished Icon of Impact Award given by the Junior Chamber International-Philippine New York on December 28, 2016 at Sheraton La Guardia East Hotel in New York City.
Braganza was cited for “Being an Artist Extraordinaire and Empowering Children”, whose exemplary qualities made noteworthy contributions for the betterment and welfare of local and international communities. One of Braganza’s brainchild projects for the youth, Street of Dreams Project for the Arts, Philippines has not only benefited the youth in the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) but also the Filipino youth from his yearly dance and acting workshops conducted in different communities in the Philippines.
Former Silliman University Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Tactical Officer and Outstanding Sillimanian Awardee in the field of Military Chaplaincy, Rev. Dr. Frank D. Somera, Jr. has donated a box of assorted personal military paraphernalia which will be put on display at the Silliman University Reserve Officers Training Corps Museum. An accompanying box of Bibles has also been turned over to the Office of Student Services (OSS).
The SU ROTC Museum which was formally opened on December 5, 2014 is the first of its kind in the country. The Museum, located at the Col. Roman T. Yap Hall, is dedicated to the University’s rich history in military service. Rev. Somera’s donation will expand the museum’s collection and affirm patriotism.
Rev. Somera is a retired United States Army Chaplain with a rank of Colonel, now based in Copperas Cove, Texas. He completed his Elementary (1951), High School (1955) and Master in Divinity in Silliman.
