Calling for Applicants to the Japan Service-Learning (JSL) Program 2024!

The Silliman University (SU) Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning (OCESL) is now accepting applications from SU undergraduate students for the Japan Service-Learning (JSL) Program of International Christian University (ICU) in Tokyo, Japan.

The JSL Program will be held from December 3 until 18, 2024 at International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan. The program fee is free of charge. ICU will cover the accommodation. Participants are to cover round-trip airfare, overseas travel insurance fees, visa, transportation, meals, and other personal expenses.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS:

September 6, 2024 (Friday) at 12:00 NOON.

NOTE: The OCESL reserves the right not to accept applicants past the deadline.

Program Description

In December 2024, the Service-Learning Center of International Christian University (ICU) will host the Japan Service-Learning program. This program will bring together students from Lady Doak College (Madurai, India) and Silliman University (Dumaguete, the Philippines), in an immersive service-learning project with local community partners in Japan. The deliberately intercultural nature of this program will provide the opportunity to work, reflect, and learn as a team across different cultural backgrounds.

Program Aims

Through the two-week program, students are expected to:
• broaden understanding of Japanese culture
• learn through community engagement in local Japanese communities
• work on issues with students from different cultural backgrounds

Service Activities [Tentative]

• December 3 Arrival in Tokyo
• Opening ceremony and orientation,
Service activities around the ICU and a few excursions in Tokyo
• Activities with ICU students
• Reflection, Final presentation and closing ceremony
• December 18 Depart from Japan

Eligibility

This program is open to undergraduate students from any discipline. During the program, the instruction and group reflection will be facilitated in English, but there might be opportunities to communicate with local Japanese people who only speak in Japanese.

Applicants must meet all the following requirements:

• Passion for community engagement in Japan
• Ability to adjust to local life in Japan
• Ability to adapt to and work in a different cultural setting
• Previous volunteer or community engagement experience
• Fluency in oral and written English
**Preferred but not required** Basic Japanese language skills
