DepEd chief Briones visits SU

Prof. Leonor M. Briones, DepEd secretary and former chairman of the SU Board of Trustees. Briones, who obtained her BBA major in Accounting and graduated magna cum laude from Silliman University in 1960, is also an Outstanding Sillimanian awardee (1982).

Dr. Leonor M. Briones, Department of Education (DepEd) secretary, visited Silliman University (SU) April 11 to discuss the Alternative Learning System-Education and Skills Training (ALS-EST) program of SU. She met with the University vice presidents and SU ALS-EST program core coordinators at the Administration board room.

Atty. Nepomuceno A. Malaluan, DepEd undersecretary and chief-of-staff, led the discussion on “ALS-EST: Integrating Education and Skills Training in Non-formal Education.”

DepEd also donated copies of their official ALS-EST Handbook for Implementers to the Silliman University Main Library. SU’s curriculum integration of the ALS-EST program has been featured on page 46 of the said handbook, which was published earlier this year.

Dr. Pablito A. dela Rama, a coordinator of SU ALS-EST and College of Education (COE) dean, said that COE was tapped by former SU President Ben S. Malayang III and DepEd in 2018 to create a proposal for the ALS-EST program in SU. He said the process of finalizing the curriculum integration of ALS-EST in SU with DepEd Dumaguete is still ongoing, but the program has started to accept applicants since January this year.

The ALS is DepEd’s flagship program that provides a viable alternative to the existing formal education instruction for Filipino youth and adults who are unable to access or have dropped out from formal basic education.

The SU ALS-EST program is an enhanced ALS program that integrates Education and Skills Training on the following skills: para-teaching, assistant librarianship, sports coaching and officiating, and information and communications technology.
