DepEd chief Briones visits SU
Dr. Leonor M. Briones, Department of Education (DepEd) secretary, visited Silliman University (SU) April 11 to discuss the Alternative Learning System-Education and Skills Training (ALS-EST) program of SU. She met with the University vice presidents and SU ALS-EST program core coordinators at the Administration board room.
Atty. Nepomuceno A. Malaluan, DepEd undersecretary and chief-of-staff, led the discussion on “ALS-EST: Integrating Education and Skills Training in Non-formal Education.”
DepEd also donated copies of their official ALS-EST Handbook for Implementers to the Silliman University Main Library. SU’s curriculum integration of the ALS-EST program has been featured on page 46 of the said handbook, which was published earlier this year.
Dr. Pablito A. dela Rama, a coordinator of SU ALS-EST and College of Education (COE) dean, said that COE was tapped by former SU President Ben S. Malayang III and DepEd in 2018 to create a proposal for the ALS-EST program in SU. He said the process of finalizing the curriculum integration of ALS-EST in SU with DepEd Dumaguete is still ongoing, but the program has started to accept applicants since January this year.
The ALS is DepEd’s flagship program that provides a viable alternative to the existing formal education instruction for Filipino youth and adults who are unable to access or have dropped out from formal basic education.
The SU ALS-EST program is an enhanced ALS program that integrates Education and Skills Training on the following skills: para-teaching, assistant librarianship, sports coaching and officiating, and information and communications technology.
The program is targetting a maximum of 750 students for its first batch to start this coming academic year, and is still accepting applicants until May. Interested individuals may contact the SU ALS-EST office at: (035) 422-6002 local 359
