Newberry Short-Term Fellowship for Writers, Artists, and Other Humanists
Deadline:December 15, 2018

The Newberry Library’s long-standing fellowship program provides outstanding scholars with the time, space, and community required to pursue innovative and ground-breaking scholarship. In addition to the Library’s collections, fellows are supported by a collegial interdisciplinary community of researchers, curators, and librarians. An array of scholarly and public programs also contributes to an engaging intellectual environment.

The following short-term fellowships are intended to support Writers, Artists, and Other Humanists:

The Jan and Frank Cicero Fellowship offers one month of support for a person working in the visual and performing arts who wishes to benefit from the Newberry’s collections and its scholarly community to advance their artistic practice. The Newberry encourages applications from a wide range of artists and performers, including – but not limited to – painters, sculptors, choreographers; dramaturgs, creative writers, composers and others in artistic fields; those working in traditional academic settings, including full-time academic faculty, are ineligible. Applicants should explain specific collections at the Newberry that will be investigated in support of their artistic vision and explain the expected product that would result. This fellowship is intended to support one month in residence at the Newberry. Chicago-area residents who are awarded a Cicero Fellowship may choose to distribute their time over six months on a flexible basis to be determined in conversation with Newberry staff.

The Arthur and Lila Weinberg Fellowship for Independent Researchers is designated for writers, journalists, filmmakers, visual and performing artists, and other humanists who wish to use the Newberry’s collection to further their creative work. Preference is given to individuals working on projects that focus on social justice or reform. Applicants must be individuals working outside of traditional academic settings, who are not employed as, or seeking employment as, full-time academic faculty. Recipients may be asked to present their work to the scholarly community at the Newberry during their residency. Applicants within the Chicago metropolitan area are eligible. One month of funding is available; however, local recipients may choose to distribute their time over several months.

The fellowship awards are $2,500 for one month in residence at the Newberry, during which time recipients are expected to participate in the scholarly community and public programming of the Newberry.
