GMA Network features SU alumna for international awards

Dr. Jenny Lind Elmaco, Silliman University (SU) alumna, spoke to GMA Regional TV about being awarded by the Global Women Inventors and Innovators Network (GlobalWIIN) the Global Exemplary Award for Education – Double Gold and the Innovative Leadership Diamond Award in 2021.

Elmaco’s interview with GMA Regional TV was aired February 14, 2023.

In the interview with Cecille Quibod-Castro of GMA Cebu, Elmaco talked about how proud she is to be from Dumaguete City and to be a graduate of SU, despite facing discrimination early in her career for being a “probinsyana” (a female resident of a rural area).

“I’ve made it a point [to prove that] all of those who are graduating from what you call as a ‘provincial’ school, they can do much more,” said Elmaco in the interview.

Elmaco was awarded during the GlobalWIIN Virtual Awards Ceremony last December 2, 2021 and received the plaques in person during the GlobalWIIN Conference Awards Ceremony last July 27-28, 2022 in London, UK.

GlobalWIIN, a partner of the UK-based Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA), also endorsed Elmaco for the RSA Fellowship.

Elmaco became an RSA Fellow in November 2022.

Founded in 1754, the RSA is a global network of changemakers, including entrepreneurs, educators, and innovators working together for the advancement of society, the economy, and the environment. Notable RSA Fellows include Charles Dickens, Nelson Mandela, and Sarah Gilbert, among others.

Elmaco is currently the regional coordinator of EURAXESS Worldwide; the third country national contact point of the European Commission’s Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions; and chapter chair of the Marie Curie Alumni Association.

With her work in supporting research initiatives, Elmaco incorporates her advocacy to promote science diplomacy.

“I am very active in science diplomacy, promoting women in science such as in Girls Congress, which was birthed in [SU] with support from the US Embassy. I am also working on science and peace which we hope to push together with the local governments soon,” said Elmaco through email correspondence with the SU Office of Information and Publications.

Elmaco, who also served as the former director of the SU Strategic Partnerships Office, is a “true red” Sillimanian as she completed Elementary (1987), High School (1997), and AB Political Science (2002), magna cum laude, at SU.

“Silliman has always been an incredible springboard, not only to pursue scientific pursuits but also bring together science and societal engagement and supporting actively sustainable development. Since I started school in Silliman from early childhood, we were encouraged to discover, to question, to explore our surroundings, to love the environment, and to respect nature which is exactly what a good scientist aspires to be. I have been fortunate to have had deep conversations with leading Silliman scientists like the late Dr. Angel Alcala who has been a great enabler and inspiration,” said Elmaco.
