Graduate Dean, Nursing Faculty Join Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop in Japan

Dean of Graduate Programs Dr. Enrique G. Oracion and College of Nursing faculty Dr. Theresa A. Guino-o attended the sixth and last workshop for scholars on disaster preparedness and climate resiliency, held August 4 to 9 in Kyoto, Japan. 

The International Workshop Toward Building Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Asia had for its wrap-up session scholars from around Asia, representing its partner institutions: Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research, Syiah Kuala University (Indonesia), Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Malaysia), Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines) and Silliman.

Organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University, the host, the workshop was part of a project that covered a two-year period, 2015 to 2017. The entire project was funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. 

During this last workshop, Dr. Oracion delivered a keynote address on “Weekend Flashflood: Social Media as Discourse Platform in Natural Disaster”, while Dr. Guino-o presented a paper on “Surviving Disasters in Health Care: Strengthening Resilience, Ingenuity and Love”. 

Together with Dr. Oracion, other scholars from Silliman were also involved in the two-year workshop on different dates and held in different countries: Dr. Roberto Guino-o (Kyoto, Japan), Asst. Prof. Wilma Tejero (Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines), Assoc. Prof. Roy de Leon (Kyoto), Asst. Prof. Emervencia Ligutom (Banda Aceh, Indonesia) and Dr. Evalyn Abalos (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).
