SU 120th Founders Day commences

The Silliman University (SU) 120th Founders Day officially kicked off Sunday, August 8, 2021 with the opening worship at the Silliman Church with Dr.  Elizabeth Susan Vista-Suarez, dean of the College of Performing and Visual Art, as speaker.

In her sermon, Dr. Suarez, who is also the co-chair of this year’s FD Committee, said  “Life is a matter of a CALL and a RESPONSE, a reciprocity between the divine and the human, an action and reaction: God to man, man to God, or man to man. Sometimes, when we get caught up in the issues of the day, we may not hear God’s voice, and our responses do not include Him.”

Dr. Suarez emphasized that “the calls to reverence, faith, and participation are the gist of our Christian walk. We are called to reverence, so we can discern His ultimate will for us. We are called to faith so we can trust His ultimate will for us. We are called to participate in His redemptive work because we are His hands, feet, and voice in a world that sometimes forgets to recognize His presence and sovereignty.”

She concluded by saying this year’s Founders Day theme, “Faith Anchored on God’s Omnipotence: 120 Years of Grace and Glory,” can be summarized in two words: Call and Response.

SU also announced last July 29 the official logo for its 120th Founders Day celebration, which was designed by Aaron Beverson Tercera, a Level 1 student at the SU College of Nursing.

Tercera’s design won the 120th Founders Day Logo & T-Shirt Design Contest, for which he received a cash prize of P10,000 and a plaque of recognition.

In his description of the logo, Tercera said: “This design is inspired by the original Silliman logo, and has elements synonymous to the university like the Bible and the lit lamp. With grace being the focus of this year’s celebration, the cross sign was integrated into the number ‘120,’ representing the decades Silliman has been with God’s faith and glory.”

Other highlights of the celebration include the 59th Outstanding Sillimanian Awards, a virtual Parada Sillimaniana and Unity Prayer, the 75th Miss Silliman Pageant, and virtual Balik Talent Lectures by the different academic units, among others.

The SU Divinity School, celebrating its centennial this year, has also prepared several activities to mark the celebration. Their activities include a devotion and book launching, the Diakonia Awards, and alumni convocation.

One thing common among these activities is that they will be held virtually due to the pandemic that continues to hamper any face-to-face activity.
