Asst. Prof. Arsenio D. Bulfa Jr. of Silliman University’s (SU) College of Agriculture recently presented two research papers at the 10th International Exchange and Innovation Conference on Engineering & Sciences (IEICES 2024), held on October 17-18, 2024, at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.

Bulfa’s first paper, “Enhancing the Chemical Properties and Recovery Rates of Organic Fertilizer through Carbon-to-Nitrogen Manipulation of Biomass Wastes,” detailed findings from a study funded by the SU Faculty Grants for Research. It examined how modifying the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio in biomass waste can enhance the chemical quality of organic fertilizers, increase recovery rates, and accelerate decomposition time.

The second paper, “Evaluation of the Morphological and Physiological Changes in Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus),” focused on tracking the physiological development of okra seeds to assess maturation stages and create models for crop development. This research was initially conducted as part of Bulfa’s coursework in Crop Seed Physiology at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Bulfa’s participation at IEICES 2024 was supported by the SEARCA School Travel Grant, awarded by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture. This grant aligns with SEARCA’s mission to foster agricultural innovation and lead in advancing rural development across the region.

IEICES 2024 attracted academics, researchers, and students from around the world to discuss innovations in materials, energy, and environmental engineering and sciences. The conference featured over 200 research papers on topics ranging from applied electronics to molecular materials, advanced energy systems, and environmental engineering, providing a vibrant platform for scientific exchange.

Papers from the conference are published annually, ensuring the swift dissemination of research findings and supporting ongoing academic discourse within the scientific community.
