SU CMC to host events for SU Founders Day
The Silliman University (SU) College of Mass Communication is holding three events back-to-back-to-back on Thursday, August 22, 2024 to celebrate SU’s 123rd founding anniversary.
2nd Ireneo & Asuncion Maslog Essay-Writing Contest
CMC will launch the 2nd Ireneo and Asuncion Maslog Essay Writing Contest at the Multipurpose Room (MPR).
Cash prizes await the grand winner, first runner-up, and five consolation winners of the essay writing contest. The grand winner will also be given tuition fee credits for the second semester of School Year 2024–2025.
The contest is open to mass communication students from Silliman University who meet the specified grade requirements and submit the needed documents. The contest proper will be held on August 27, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at the CMC Reading Room. Contest winners will be awarded at a CMC event during the SU Founders Day celebrations. Certificates of participation will also be given.
This will be the second time the essay writing contest will be held. The inaugural version was held last year with Ria Askin, then-senior SU CMC student, winning the grand prize for her essay titled, “Editors’ Exodus: The Advent of AI-Generated News.”
The contest was established by the Ireneo and Asuncion Maslog Trust Fund, the donors of which are Dr. Crispin Maslog, first regular director of the SU School of Journalism and Communication, SU CMC’s forerunner; and his wife Dr. Florita S. Maslog, a pioneer of the Silliman Medical Technology Program.
Honoring the Jubilarians
Eight graduates of the Bachelor of Journalism (BJ) program will be honored in simple rites at the MPR. They are Melanie Catedral-Aromin, Jesus Manuel F. Escudero, Charles G. Fuentes, Rosario Maxino-Baseleres, Danilo C. Medija, Helen B. Reyes, Marian Ty-Lim, and Precioso N. Panajon.
Members of the batch of BJ graduates of 1974, they have followed different career paths after completing their baccalaureate degree. They are this year’s CMC Jubilarians, marking the 50th year after they have received their degrees from Silliman University.
The CMC Balik-Talent Forum 2024
The Silliman University (SU) College of Mass Communication (CMC) will host two of its esteemed alumni, a CEO and a lawyer, for this year’s Balik-Talent Forum at 2:00 p.m. at SU’s Audio-Visual Theater.
Springzeal Daniel, president and CEO of OceanClick Virtual Solutions, will discuss “Harnessing AI and Prompt Engineering: Transforming Journalism and Virtual Solutions.”
Daniel received her mass communication degree from SU in 2007. She has been working in the business process outsourcing industry since her graduation. Aside from OceanClick Virtual Solutions, she founded Calabeera, Savena, DARTS, and Springzeal Cosmetics.
Atty. Eric Samuel Joven, Corporate Legal Counsel at the Marie France Group of Companies, will speak on “Navigating the Self-Regulation of the Advertising Industry in the Philippines.”
Atty. Joven obtained his Bachelor of Mass Communication from Silliman University in 1998. He completed his law studies at Lyceum of the Philippines University, obtaining his Bachelor of Laws degree in 2015 and was admitted to the Bar in 2016. He has also been a volunteer panelist for the Ads Standard Council since 2019.
The annual Balik Talent Forum aims to provide a venue where Silliman alumni
can share their knowledge, expertise, and unique experiences with students and other members of the academic community. It is organized in collaboration with CMC student organization Kapunungan sa mga Mass Communicators, along with a series of events to celebrate SU’s 123rd Founding Anniversary. (Shay Du/SU CMC)
