SU College of Law Faculty, Students to Participate in 7th AsianSIL Biennial Confab
Three faculty members and two senior J.D. students of the S.U. College of Law have been selected to participate in the 7th Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) to be held on August 21 to 24, 2019 at the UP College of Law and at the Novotel Manila Araneta Center in Quezon City, Philippines. This was announced by Atty. Sheila Lynn M. Catacutan-Besario, dean of the SU College of Law.
The Conference, which is Asia’s largest gathering of judges of various international law tribunals and international law luminaries and academics, is hosted by AsianSIL and co-sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, the Philippine Society of International Law, the University of the Philippines College of Law and the UP Law Center.
The theme of the conference is “Rethinking International Law: Finding Common Solutions to Contemporary Civilizational Issues from an Asian Perspective.” His Excellency Judge Yuji Iwasawa of the International Court of Justice, a notable academic and chair of the UN Human Rights Committee prior to his stint at the World Court, will deliver the keynote speech.
Former SU Law Dean and Professor of International Law, Atty. Myles Nicholas G. Bejar, who presently serves as a Trustee of the Philippine Society of International Law, has been selected to facilitate the junior scholars panel on International Legal Norm Entrepreneurship, International Legal Theory and Foundational Issues.
Adjunct SU Professor of International Human Rights Law, Dr. David Joseph Padilla, has been chosen to facilitate the junior scholars’ panel on Armed Conflict and Terrorism in Asia and International Criminal Law and to chair the senior scholars’ panel on Comparative Approaches to International Human Rights Law: Asian and other Regions.
Atty. Gilbert Agustin J. Ganir, who is a member of the International Law Faculty of the SU College of Law, will be the official delegate of the law school in the conference.
Senior SU J.D. students James Shemron C. Corro and Josef James T. Gara are two of only three J.D. students from the Philippines who have been selected to present papers in the conference. They will join untenured or tenure track academics and post-doctoral fellows from other Asian countries, Europe and the United States as junior scholars of the conference.
Corro will be presenting the paper “The Legality of the Unilateral Use of Force against Syria in Response to State-Sponsored Chemical Attacks against its own Citizens.” On the other hand, Gara will be presenting the paper “Death by Speech: Establishing the Inchoate Liability of Direct and Public Incitement to Mass Atrocities in International Humanitarian Law.” The papers are based on their J.D. thesis which they successfully defended in May of this year.
AsianSIL is comprised of regional chapters and national international law societies in Asia, which includes the Philippine Society of International Law (PSIL). The current President of AsianSIL is from the Philippines, former Presidential Spokesperson and UP Professor of International Law H. Harry L. Roque, Jr.
