SU embraces AI to transform education
The Silliman University (SU) Board of Trustees has officially approved the Policies and Implementing Guidelines for the Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Silliman University’s educational framework.
These guidelines are based on the university’s AI Integration Framework, which was approved in 2023. The newly approved policies and guidelines will now be widely disseminated to ensure that all stakeholders are informed and can effectively engage with the university’s AI initiatives.
With the approval of these guidelines, the university strengthens its commitment to enhancing teaching, learning, and operations through AI while maintaining high ethical standards. The AI Integration Framework, detailed in the new document, emphasizes core values such as innovation, ethical use, continuous learning, and a student-centric approach. This framework aims to personalize learning experiences, streamline administrative tasks, and ensure AI applications align with the university’s mission and values.
The following are the key highlights:
- Guiding Principles: The university provides detailed guidelines for all stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and parents, to responsibly integrate AI into various aspects of university life. This includes training programs led by the Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center, ethical AI use in research, and the development of inclusive learning materials.
- Practical Applications: AI will be utilized in classrooms for content creation and personalized learning, in research for data analysis and writing support, and administratively for task automation and information management.
- Do’s and Don’ts: Clear guidelines are established for the effective and ethical use of AI tools in content generation, assessments, and research, helping ensure that AI is used appropriately across academic disciplines.
- Transparency and Integrity: The document outlines steps for declaring AI tool usage in academic submissions, emphasizing transparency and academic integrity through AI detection tools and direct communication between instructors and students.
- Upskilling Program: A robust upskilling program will be implemented, offering training for teachers, staff, students, and parents through various formats, including online, in-person, and hybrid sessions. This program aims to equip stakeholders with the skills necessary for ethical AI use.
- Ongoing Initiatives: The university will host a range of events, seminars, and workshops to promote AI literacy and practical implementation, reinforcing its dedication to continuous learning and innovation.

In relation to this, the Dr. Mariano Lao Global Studies Center held its first upskilling activity titled “Silliman University Artificial Intelligence Guidelines” for the school year 2024-2025 on August 7, 2024, 2:00-4:00 PM. It was attended by SU faculty and staff via Zoom. The main goal of the webinar was to inform the Silliman Community about the new policies and guidelines and to provide instructions on how to access them. For teachers, these guidelines should be included in their syllabi for the semester.
