As part of its Continuing Calamity Response Program, Silliman University (SU) extended relief assistance to residents of Barangay Pula, Canlaon City, who were affected by the recent eruption of Mount Kanlaon.

The relief operation, conducted on May 13, 2026, benefited more than 100 families, including members of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) Canlaon Chapter, and was spearheaded by faculty members from the College of Business Administration (CBA).

The recurring eruptions of Mt. Kanlaon since June 2024 have caused widespread ashfall and severe disruption across several communities in Negros Island, prompting institutions and organizations to mobilize humanitarian assistance and disaster response initiatives. Through this outreach effort, SU reaffirmed its commitment to compassionate service, solidarity, and social responsibility by extending support to vulnerable communities affected by natural calamities.

Each beneficiary family received 10 kilos of rice along with various relief goods intended to help ease the hardships brought about by the volcanic eruption. Children were also provided with biscuits, toothbrushes, and essential clothing items. Residents of Barangay Pula expressed their gratitude for the timely assistance, sharing that the support brought comfort, relief, and hope amid the challenges caused by the eruption.

The operation also highlighted the spirit of bayanihan among volunteers, church members, and university representatives who worked together to deliver aid and encouragement to the affected community.

Earlier, Canlaon City was likewise severely affected by Typhoon Tino, which struck on November 4, 2025, causing catastrophic flash floods and landslides in several areas. The disaster resulted in at least 23 confirmed fatalities, widespread infrastructure damage, and extensive agricultural losses.

In response, SU conducted a large-scale relief operation that benefited more than 300 families, including members of the UCCP church community. Relief packs containing rice, canned goods, milk, hygiene kits, and other essential supplies were distributed to residents severely affected by the calamity.

Faculty members, staff, and students from the CBA collaborated in repacking donated items prior to their transport to Canlaon City for distribution. The repacking operations, held at the CBA, brought together student volunteers, CBA faculty and staff, and FMAS personnel in preparing the relief goods.

The donations included rice, mineral water, canned goods, biscuit packs, milk, candles, plates, pails, soap, shampoo, hygiene kits containing sanitary napkins and toothbrushes, pre-loved clothing, underwear, and clothing items for children. These were generously contributed by various units across the university, including the College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration, College of Education, Senior High School, College of Engineering and Design, College of Computer Studies, Divinity School, Facilities Management and Administrative Services, Business and Finance Office, Institute of Rehabilitative Sciences, Institute of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, as well as several private individuals.

The university’s relief assistance covered 12 evacuation centers, namely: Masulog Elementary School, Gaboc Covered Court–Verbena, Gaboc Covered Court (Tino), JBCMHS Uptown Campus, MEMS, Mormons, Canlaon City Gymnasium, Panubigan Barangay Hall, Panubigan Elementary School, Binalbagan Elementary School, Lumapao Covered Court, and Bayog Covered Court. Around 100 members of the UCCP Church Canlaon City Chapter also received relief assistance during the operation.

The relief initiatives in Canlaon brought together SU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends residing in the city, reflecting a strong spirit of unity, compassion, and community service in responding to the needs of affected residents.

Through these continuing humanitarian efforts, SU remains steadfast in its mission of serving communities in times of crisis and promoting hope, resilience, and compassion among those affected by calamities.
