SU Global Studies Center participates in nat’l discussion on Artificial Intelligence
Dr. Dave E. Marcial, Silliman University (SU) Dr. Mariano C. Lao Global Studies Center (GSC) director, and Fredlie P. Bucog, GSC faculty-in-charge of Education and Engagement, participated in the National Stakeholders Roundtable on Ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI), organized by the United Nations (UN) in the Philippines on November 29, 2023 in Westin Hotel, Manila.
Marcial and Bucog represented the academe in the breakout discussion on the opportunities for the Philippines to harness ethical AI.
Other topics discussed during the event included the fundamentals of AI; guidelines, frameworks, and policy; and AI policy and practice in the Philippines.
The event aimed to convene national stakeholders in the field of AI to discuss global ethical frameworks and best practices concerning AI, within the context of the country’s AI landscape.
The gathering also served as an opportunity to provide information about and garner support from Philippine stakeholders for the UNESCO AI Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM).
The UNESCO AI RAM is a tool designed to assist the country in determining its preparedness to implement AI ethically and responsibly, identifying institutional and regulatory changes needed for the future.
Before this event, Marcial participated in a regional experts’ meeting titled “Empowering Minds: A Round Table on Generative AI and Education in Asia-Pacific,” held at the Pullman Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 7 to 9, 2023.
