SU hosts Harvard students for leadership forum
Silliman University (SU) hosted Harvard University students who are members of the Harvard Philippine Forum to join students from schools in the Negros Island, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor in discussions about youth leadership, January 9, 2023.
The Harvard Philippine Forum is a community of Filipinos, Filipino-Americans, and friends that celebrates Philippine culture and tradition with the Harvard community.
The Harvard University students visited SU as part of the Harvard Philippine Forum’s annual service and culture trip to the Philippines. This year, the students’ trip is focused on the theme, “Igniting Transformative Leadership Across Seas.”
The Harvard University students exchanged stories and experiences on leadership with the student attendees in a gathering at the SU Hall.
The Harvard University students also talked about opportunities for STEM and social science students, research and professional opportunities, and extracurricular and social experiences at Harvard University for those who are interested in studying in the United States.
Guest speaker Rochelle Miguel, EducationUSA adviser, also talked about how students in the Philippines can apply to study in the United States.
Students from the following schools attended the gathering: SU, Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, Foundation University, Holy Name University, Negros Oriental State University, Ramon Teves Pastor Memorial – Dumaguete Science High School, Riverside College, Siquijor State College, Talisay City College, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, University of San Jose-Recoletos, and Negros Oriental High School.
Members of the SU administration also met with the Harvard University students to welcome them and introduce SU’s programs and initiatives.
Dr. Betty Cernol McCann, SU president; Dr. Earl Jude Paul L. Cleope, SU vice president for Academic Affairs; Prof. Jane Annette L. Belarmino, vice president for Development, Enterprises, and External Affairs; Dr. Edna Gladys T. Calingacion, dean of students; and Melita C. Aguilar, Office of Information and Publications director met with the students at the Justice Venancio D. Aldecoa Moot Court.
Yolanda V. Maxino, student recruitment officer, and Krystle Joyce M. Ozoa, marketing officer, gave a presentation about SU.
