SU hosts journalism masterclass
The Kapunungan sa mga Mass Communicators (KMC), the academic organization of the Silliman University College of Mass Communication, hosted a Campus Journalism Masterclass (CJM) last October 31 and November 7.
This year’s Campus Journalism Masterclass, which was formerly known as Campus Journalism Workshop, revolved around the theme “Press On: Establishing Progressive Student Journalism.”
The masterclass aimed to equip student journalists from all over the country with the knowledge and skills of journalism especially for the changing times, and to produce campus journalists who are passionate, skillful, resilient, and with integrity.
CJM was held through Zoom and Facebook Live, with 600 student journalists and school paper advisers from 26 secondary and tertiary schools all over the country including Silliman University.
The speakers for CJM were media personalities of renown from different fields of journalism.
The first pair of speakers consisted of Ms. Jacque Manabat, ABS-CBN senior multi-platform journalist, who discussed the topic “Student Journalism in Documentation and Field Reporting,” and Mr. Val Amiel Vestil, founder of Association of Young Environmental Journalists (AYEJ), who talked about “The Role of Student Journalists in Environmental Activism.”
The second-day speakers were Ms. Lyza Aquino, multiplatform reporter for ABS-CBN Manila, who tackled the topic “Digital Journalism 101,” and Mr. Joeberth Ocao, senior editor of The Freeman, who discussed “Leadership and Team Building.”
“In line with the theme ‘Establishing Progressive Student Publication,’ we aim to empower or encourage the students and advisers in setting the agenda of their respective schools and communities with the stories they are publishing without fear and border,” said Francis Ryan Pabiana, CJM Marketing Co-chairperson.
“We want to give the participants an online platform (through which they can) learn from our speakers to help them pursue their dreams in journalism or communications as well as in running the publication,” Pabiana said.
CJM also hosted a raffle where ten participants had the chance to win ₱150 worth of load to help them in their online classes.
The Kapunungan sa mga Mass Communicators of Silliman University is looking to invite other media practitioners of note and student journalists along with their campus paper advisers to participate in the next masterclass. (Hannah Abril)
