SU Math student claims victory at 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz – NegOr

Riana Marie P. Mallo, a BS in Mathematics freshman student of the Silliman University College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), is declared champion at the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Negros Oriental elimination.

Silliman University’s (SU) Riana Marie P. Mallo, a freshman in the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), emerged as the champion in the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) provincial elimination held on October 30, 2024, at the GSP Conference Hall, Dumaguete City. 

Joining Mallo in the top three were Jezryll James A. Ege of Negros Oriental State University as the 1st runner up and Yvette Julienne B. Pis-an of Saint Paul University Dumaguete as the 2nd runner up.

The provincial elimination for Negros Oriental featured a total of 23 participants from eight universities in Dumaguete City, including Asian College, Foundation University, Metro Dumaguete College, Negros Maritime College Foundation Inc., Negros Oriental State University, Saint Paul University – Dumaguete, and STI College. 

Mallo was joined by fellow Sillimanian competitors Zayed Abukoya E. Mohamed, a BS Physics student, and Criztian Q. Radoc, who is pursuing a degree in BS Psychology. Dr. Rhea Rheem Muarip-Bolodo, the chairperson of SU’s Mathematics Department, served as the coach for the team.

Organized by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in partnership with the Philippine Statistical Association (PSA), the PSQ is an annual competition, which is part of the nationwide celebration of Statistics Month. It has been a staple in the academic calendar since its inception in 1992.

The quiz aims to assess the knowledge of first-year college students enrolled in public and private institutions nationwide, with contestants representing all 17 regions of the country. It also serves as a vital platform for fostering statistical literacy among the youth and promoting the significance of statistics in various fields.
