SU OCESL hosts int’l service-learning students from Hong Kong, Japan, and the USA
The Silliman University (SU) Office of Community Engagement and Service-Learning (OCESL) hosted students from three international institutions as part of its flagship International Service-Learning (IS-L) Program.
Students from Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CCC-CUHK) were welcomed from May 27 to June 9, 2024. They were followed by students from International Christian University (ICU), Tokyo, Japan, from June 26 to July 23, 2024, and finally, from George Mason University (GMU), Virginia, USA, from August 2 to 11, 2024.
The IS-L Program welcomed 55 students—16 from CCC-CUHK, 16 from ICU, and 23 from GMU—along with their Silliman University student buddies, engaging in service to partner communities and agencies of OCESL. These included the City Social Welfare and Development Office’s La Casa Esperanza & Child Protection Unit; Dumaguete City Youth Home; Purok Makugihon Women Association in Mangnao; Nagkahiusang Kabayin-an sa Bantayan; Little Children of the Philippines Foundation, Inc.; Gawad Kalinga Jamalipayon Village in Jawa, Valencia; and Barangay Boloc-Boloc in Dauin.
SU students who served as buddies during these engagements included Dennie Myka Agader, Esther Calderon, Clarisse Rafaela Culi, Angelina Estacion, Loverne Gem Librando, Jillian Marie Solitana, Lou Kirsten Tan, Chloei Vincoy, Heini Borromeo, Jacynth Khine Jiz de Ortega, Athena Therese Dumaog, Jane Zanet Kadile, Francis Clark Katipunan, Hrion Mohametano, Princess Lumayag, Kyla Jane Tiña, Deborah Tiu, Xenia Denise Fabe, Neil Nazareth Aguilar, Bengle Faburada, Hannah Gaile Galanza, Darlyn Hilario, Carl Anthony Repato, Augrain Ridad, Micah Saycon, and Paul Ivan Zamora.
This year’s cohort from CCC-CUHK was accompanied by Dr. Angela Wong, a CCC-CUHK professor, and Ms. Karen Ng, a CCC-CUHK project coordinator. Dr. Al B. Fuertes, an associate professor and Global Study Abroad adviser from GMU, also joined the GMU group.
The IS-L Program is a community-engaged teaching-and-learning program that immerses participants in real-world learning experiences within Philippine communities. By adapting Service-Learning as its core pedagogy, the program enables participants to engage in activities that address community needs and promote development, while also fulfilling specific learning goals or requirements set by their home institutions.
